FREECYCLE - This might not be for carers, but a worldwide idea and well worth looking into. Basically, it allows you and other local people to interact and recycle goods (from books to barn doors!) between yourselves. Whether in need, or getting rid. You need to sign up to Yahoo for your local group. Go to the main website, and use the links from there.
