Carers rarely identify themselves as carers without some sort of prompting or information.

They are what we call “Hidden” Carers.

If they do not see themselves as carers they are not able to access the support they need.

According to the Census taken in 2001, the table below indicates the number of unpaid carers in Calderdale at that time and how many hours of care they provided.  Set against a total population of 190,000 in Calderdale it means that virtually 1 in 10 people in Calderdale are carers.

1 to 19 hours of care provided

20 to 49 hours of care provided

50 or more hours of care provided

TOTAL

13874

3878

19720

It is likely that this figure will rise at the next census.
