The Project runs 5 Carers Support Groups throughout Calderdale.

If you would like to come please ring us beforehand.

Carers come to the groups for many reasons.

For someone to talk to

For mutual support

To meet other carers

To let off steam

For relaxation

To cry or to laugh

To make friends

To get and share information

To have a break from caring

Each group is different according to what those carers need and want. Some groups of carers prefer to laugh, joke and generally have a break from their caring role. Other groups prefer to discuss or offload the feelings and emotions that their caring situation brings about.

Nevertheless, at times, serious issues can arise. Each group is facilitated by Carers Project staff. It may be possible to speak one on one with a staff member, but this does depend on availability.

If you find that the group you have attended does not meet your needs then please speak to us as we may be able to signpost you on to another group which may meet your needs or suit you better.

If you find that a carers Support Group is not personal, or in-depth enough in times of crisis you may find that either telephone support or even counselling may help you. Please contact the Support Team at the Project for more information.

Funding is available to provide a sitting service and transport costs to help carers attend the groups.

They are subject to availability and we encourage carers to use public transport or car/taxi sharing when appropriate. This means that we use our funding efficiently as well as helping the environment.

Guidelines for conduct

Confidentiality- people need to know that personal issues will not be talked about outside the group.

Respecting each others views and differences- For example shouting or offensive comments will be

challenged in a friendly way.

Talking one at a time- so that everyone gets a chance to speak and listen.

We will not tolerate verbal abuse or harassment towards staff or other members of the group.

Any person whose behaviour is not acceptable will be asked to leave.

There are some situations when the staff may need to break confidentiality, for example, if someone is at risk. A leaflet can be provided about Safeguarding adults.

Calderdale Carers Project will reimburse carers transport costs to attend the meetings. We can also arrange and pay for a professional sitter to stay with the person you care for so that you can come to the group. If you want to organise a sitter please let us know as soon as possible as we need at least 10 days notice.
